Explore my Chōchin-obake Socks!
The Chōchin-obake belongs to the group of tsukumogami – objects that develop a soul and come to life after 100 years. This object takes the form of a traditional folding lantern, crafted from paper or silk. On its hundredth birthday, a remarkable transformation occurs. It tears open along one of the wooden ribs, creating a mouth, from which emerges a large, moist tongue, sometimes bearing a candle. In the upper half, 1-2 large eyes form, and occasionally even extremities like arms grow from the lantern’s body. In some tales, Chōchin-obake dangle from the ends of long sticks, bouncing about, while more often, they simply drift through the air.
