“Hannya” are female demons; “kijo” to be precise. They were once human women who, consumed by jealousy, turned into demonesses. Depending on the level of transformation, however, there is still the possibility for the woman to change back. The “Hannya mask” is also often found in the “Noh” theatre, because of the contradiction between the demonic being and wisdom.
